Epub Maker (troubleshooting)

This tool will grab your chapters headers and use them to build a navigation TOC, so you need to set up your Word document first and use H1 tags for chapter headings. Click here for a some book formatting templates in Microsoft Word.

  • Ebooks are reflowable, which means you can’t really set the fonts or choose exactly how sentences and words break. If you include images they should stick, but you may need larger sizes (some devices have 600dpi screen so we recommend about 1200px wide for images).
  • Don’t try to get too fancy, it’s important your epub is clean and readable. However, if you really want your ebook to look professional, there are some ebook formatting tools and software that make it easier.

Best ebook formatting software

This free ebook converter works great, but if you want to save time and get better looking ebook files, here are the best ebook formatting software.

#1 Vellum: Vellum makes beautiful books, and can help with both ebook and print formatting. It’s even added features for full-page images and really fancy stuff, like dedicated author pages, links to other books, chapter headings, etc. It only works on Mac though, but you can use a mac-in-cloud service to access it anyway (which is what I do.) Get Vellum Here.

#2 Atticus:  Atticus is basically a Vellum alternative for PC, which was sorely needed. I don’t think it’s quite as good, but it does work pretty well and is easier than formatting an ebook from scratch (unless you keep it simple and just use our free tool!).

Free epub conversion and formatting – our tool is based on Calibre, which is a free open source tool you can download and format your own ebooks with. We’ve also used Sigil, which is useful when you need to edit or make changes to your epub file.

You can also use Draft2Digital to upload your files, convert to epub and download again; or Reedsy’s book formatting tool.

Understanding File Formats for Publishing Your Book

When it comes to publishing books, understanding the technical file formats is crucial. Selecting the correct format for your book is necessary to create a specific and optimized ebook for online sales. Different marketplaces have different requirements, and authors have to ensure they create a book that is compatible with the chosen marketplace.

Epub is a popular file format as it is suitable for most ebook service providers, whereas Mobi is Amazon’s preferred book format. Using a free epub to Kindle converter can format your ebook for publishing on Amazon. (UPDATE: – Amazon no longer requires .mobi files so you can use the .epub just about everywhere).

Technical details of file formats are critical for ensuring that the ebook is optimally formatted and meets the requirements for the chosen online marketplace. Amazon’s Kindle ebook formatting, for instance, varies from that of other platforms. Creating a correctly formatted ebook that meets Amazon’s requirements can influence online optimization.

Ebook service providers require ebooks to be submitted in the most suitable format. For instance, when converting ebooks to kindle epub, authors can use free online tools like Kindle Direct Publishing that offer a how-to guide on file formats (You can also just upload your Word manuscript or document directly and Kindle will convert it for you, but you should format it correctly first and that’s a whole different thing… but we have guides and book formatting templates for that too).

Selecting the Ideal File Format for Each eBookstore

You need to select the appropriate file format for publishing across multiple eBook marketplaces, such as Amazon Kindle Store or Apple’s iBooks. Formatting an eBook demands a different approach based on the platform. Therefore, utilizing one standard file format can sometimes result in rejection by online retailers (this is less true these days, as most people have decided to embrace epub as the universal format).

Various eBook formats are available; however, EPUB and MOBI are the most commonly used file formats. EPUB is more adaptable and flexible than MOBI, allowing eBooks to be compatible with e-readers such as Kobo, Nook, Android, and iOS devices. On the other hand, Amazon’s Kindle utilizes its exclusive proprietary format – MOBI – that delivers excellent user experience.

To guarantee that your ebook appeals to users on multiple electronic platforms and meets all technical requirements while also not compromising on quality, you should convert it into several digital book formats like EPUB and MOBI using reliable converters like Calibre and BookBaby or professional formatting tools like Adobe InDesign to ensure ideal ebooks kindle book formatting.

It’s best if you use professional formatting software to handle the conversion process if you need really a good looking, well designed, professionally formatted book, instead of relying solely on free conversion tools since they occasionally produce books with document errors such as missing pages or ill-formatted text.

Before deciding which marketplace(s) you would like your e-book available in, it is worth considering the compatibility with eBook readers and online retailers’ technical requirements, while preserving the highest quality for your work.

Different File Formats Available for E-Books and Print Books

The world of digital publishing has introduced various file formats for E-books and print books. Each format offers unique benefits when it comes to publishing your book. Here, we’ll discuss different file formats available for Kindle ebook and ebook kindle book formatting.

Below is a table that outlines the different file formats available for E-books and print books.

File FormatPurpose
EPUB Used by most E-book retailers and readers, compatible with many devices
MOBI Amazon’s proprietary format, exclusively used on Kindle readers
PDF Retains the original formatting but doesn’t adapt to different devices
KF8 Enhanced version of MOBI with additional features

EPUB is the most widely used format, while MOBI is exclusive to Kindle. PDF maintains formatting integrity but does not adapt well to all devices. KF8 offers enhanced features for Kindle users.

When choosing a file format, consider accessibility across devices and reader preferences. Ensure your book is accessible in at least one widely-recognized file format. Don’t miss out on readers due to incompatible formats. Choose the right file format so all readers can access your content, regardless of their device or reading preference!

Best Practices for Formatting Your Book

When it comes to prepping your ebook for publishing, proper formatting can make for a more visually appealing and cohesive finished product that is easier for readers to navigate. It’s important that your ebook uses appropriate fonts, consistent spacing, and effective images. Consider using appropriate headings and other stylistic elements to break up large blocks of text and make for a more pleasant reading experience.

However, certain ebook readers may use different fonts or display options that can impact the user experience, so it’s important to double-check your formatting across different devices to ensure your ebook is accessible and readable for all.

PDF does not convert well to epub, and will probably result in broken text. You can set spacing, breaks, and section or chapter headers and choose a serif or sans serif font… and while you *can* manually embed fonts into your epub, it won’t work everywhere and it’s not recommended. Also, even images with a transparent background (PNG) won’t look great, as some ereaders like kindle paperweight have grayer backgrounds so the png while show a white box unfortunately).

For quick and fast conversion, use our free ebook converter. This tool can help you quickly and easily convert your ebook to a format that is optimally suited for Kindle devices, streamlining the publishing process. When using this tool, keep in mind the importance of using high-quality images and formatting that is readable across multiple devices, for the best possible user experience.

If it doesn’t look great at first, you can go back and adjust your Word manuscript or document and then try converting it again.

Importance of Proper Formatting for Reader Experience

The success of your Kindle eBook depends on proper formatting for an enhanced reader experience. Avoid technical jargon and complex style elements; instead, focus on simplicity and consistency. Include an interactive table of contents, headings, footnotes, and hyperlinks to allow readers to navigate with ease.

(If you set up your word manuscript with H1/heading tags on the chapter headings and preview them with the “navigation” pane, Kindle will automatically convert that into a menu; but if you *also* want to manually add a TOC at the beginning, you can do so – it won’t have page numbers, because ebooks don’t have page numbers).

Ensure that the book is structurally organized by using standard fonts with a suitable size that aligns with the type of ebook you are publishing (here’s a list of free fonts to use in your book design and formatting; this will work great for print and PDF, but you can’t really embed fonts in an ebook and make it look good everywhere, so keep it simple.) Use italics or bold when necessary and minimize the use of image-heavy content if possible.

Poor book formatting creates discomfort and confusion for the reader, which negatively affects their reading experience. It is recommended that you conform to eBook standards by using properly structured content, headings, and subheadings.

To avoid formatting issues, understand the guidelines for publishing ebooks in Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). Once done, validate your eBook’s formatting using Amazon’s Kindle Previewer tool before publishing.

Pro Tip: Use available online tools to convert your epub into a well-formatted Kindle eBook while maintaining the original design elements.
